To Love is to Serve
Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
There’s a lot in this verse. I could talk about the greedy, materialistic culture we live in. I could talk about how so many make an idol of money. This includes the rich and the poor, the lavish spender and the tightwad. This is a convicting verse for many of us. Who is our master? Is our money or pursuit of money a tool for the advancement of God’s purposes or is it the master?
I could say all of that, but I’m not going to. What I find remarkable is how Jesus uses the terms Jesus interchangeably. What can we learn from this? Love produces service. If you love something you serve it. Love produces sacrifice. If you love something you will sacrifice for it. You can go about it the other way too. If you’re serving and sacrificing for something you must love it. Do you love the right things? In the right order? Are your priorities in order or is Jesus taking a back seat to something else?
If I love my wife I’m going to serve her, I’m going to sacrifice for her. If I love my church I’m going to sacrifice for it and serve it. If I love God I’m going to serve and sacrifice for Him. Do we love these things rightly? Are we serving and sacrificing? Or are we like the citizens of Jerusalem in Isaiah 29 or the Pharisees in Matthew 15:8…
People that honor God with their lips but deny Him with their lives.
God deserves more than lip service, He deserves our lives.
