Social justice resolution at SBC18

The Southern Baptist Convention is right around the corner, it will be held in Dallas on June 12-13. By all reports it's going to be a rocky one. It has all of the elements of a good soap opera, not that I've ever seen a soap opera. The latest hub-bub is over a resolution submitted by messenger Grady Arnold. The resolution can be found here.

Here is a brief snippet from it:

Whereas social justice activism should be considered evil in that it is a vehicle to promote abortion, homosexuality, gender confusion, and a host of other ideas that are at antithetical to the gospel, the Christian worldview, and of God’s call to holiness (1 Peter 1:16), and

In all fairness to Mr. Arnold the bible certainly speaks to abortion, homosexuality, and gender confusion. I think my concern is the "host of other ideas" he speaks of. I think that phrase is a Trojan horse to speak against a number of things that the bible is in actual favor of. Maybe, I'm wrong, I hope I am. One unintended comical line from the resolution is how Glenn Beck warned that social justice is a "perversion of the gospel." Glenn Beck, a Mormon, is going to call something a perversion of the gospel. That is rich.

Another bit of irony in the resolution is found in this statement:

Whereas social justice warriors routinely shut down speech that they disagree with, often with violence as part of their “social justice”, instead of “seeking to live at peace with all men” (Romans 12:18) and

and then later

RESOLVED That the entries of the Southern Baptist Convention be encouraged to avoid the terms “social justice” and social justice warrior” when referring to Christian ethics or activism and that the Holy Scriptures be used as a guide without mimicking the verbiage of the antichristian social justice movement, and be it

Do you see it? Social justice warriors routinely shut down speech that they disagree with, let's shut down the terms social justice and social justice warrior.

Lest you think I'm getting too preachy and political, I just wanted to share with you some verses on what the bible says about justice.

Amos 5:24 But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

Isaiah 42:1-9 Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: ...

Isaiah 1:17 Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widows' cause

Proverbs 31:8-9 Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed

A couple of disclaimers before I get accused of being a social justice warrior, an accusation that I'm really okay with. The world is not an expert on what justice is or even who deserves it. Some causes have very little biblical basis. Some of these social justice causes I would die for. Some I'm opposed to. This is why I struggle with this resolution so much. I think it's a Trojan horse for a political statement. After careful reading I realize there's content in this resolution I agree with, it just seems to have an agenda. As Christians, we must be in our bibles, we must develop biblical worldviews. We must learn to be discerning. We must learn to chew the meat and spit out the bones. We must find out what the bible teaches about justice and go and do that.
