Let the Children Come

Mark 10:13-16 Then they brought little children to Him, that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for such is the kingdom of God. Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it." And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them.

Tonight is our last night of VBS.(Yes, we're the kind of old-fashioned church that still does VBS) We've seen several children come through the doors and everyone of those children absolutely matter to God.

In the text above, people were bringing children to Jesus to bless but the disciples were rebuking the parents. Why? We're not explicitly given the answer here but I'm going to take a stab. I think the disciples had "bigger and better" plans for Jesus. Children aren't necessarily that important in climbing the corporate ladder. Jesus had to do the working of healing and teaching not bouncing babies on His knees.

2 things I think this story teaches...

First, if you don't plan your time someone else will try to. All sorts of people have plans for you. They'll make your schedule for you. You have to decide what's important and work from that.

Second, how amazing is it that Jesus didn't see them as insignificant. Those children weren't useful, they weren't going to advance Jesus in any way. Still, they mattered to Jesus. How often do we see people as nuisances, as interruptions? How often do we look past people to our next conversation? Jesus had an incredible knack for making the person in front of Him seem like the most important person around. He didn't look past people. What if we acted like that? What if we valued people not for what they can bring us, but for the simple fact that they are people created in the image of God?

"People were created to be loved. Things were created to be used. The reason why the world is in chaos, is because things are being loved and people are being used."- John Green
